Jade Succulent Plant
Jade Succulent Plant
Description
The Jade plant, or Crassula ovata, is a popular, low-maintenance succulent known for its miniature, tree-like appearance and association with good fortune.
Symbolism: In Feng Shui and Vastu practices, the jade plant is considered a good luck charm that symbolizes prosperity, wealth, and positive energy, making it a popular gift for new homes or businesses.
Toxicity: The plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested, so it should be kept out of reach of pets and children.
Plant Care
Jade plants are very low-maintenance and thrive on a bit of neglect, making them ideal for beginners.
Light: Provide at least six hours of bright light daily, ideally in a south- or west-facing window. While mature plants can tolerate direct sun, very harsh afternoon sun can scorch the leaves, so filtered light or partial shade is best in hot climates.
Watering: The most common mistake is overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot, then discard any excess. Reduce watering significantly in the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.
Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix designed for cacti and succulents, or create your own by mixing regular potting soil with perlite or coarse sand. A pot with drainage holes is essential to prevent root rot
Temperature: Average room temperatures between 65–75°F (18–24°C) are ideal. Keep the plant away from cold drafts, A/C vents, or heaters. It is not frost-tolerant.
Fertilizing: Feed sparingly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during its active growing season (spring and summer). Do not fertilize during the dormant winter months.
Pruning: Pruning can be done in the spring to maintain the desired shape and encourage a bushier, more compact plant.
Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Use a heavy, sturdy pot (like terracotta) that is only slightly larger than the previous one to provide stability for the top-heavy plant and to avoid excess soil moisture.
